Instructions for Kyrgyz information technology forum workshop

These instructions are exclusively for use on this event.

Materials

Download the following materials to your computer before starting.

  • Download and save firmware wlan slovenija.
  • Download and install WinSCP for Windows.
  • Download PuTTY for Windows.
  • Register yourself on the node database.
  • Generate a reference configuration.
    • Visit the webpage and register your node.
    • Node type choose: Test node.
    • Project choose: Test'.
    • Node name as you wish.
    • Tick Require direct connection to a VPN server.
    • Router type choose: TP-Link WR741ND.
    • Set a password or use the generated one.
    • Confirm Register.
    • Choose Generate, tick Configuration only and press Generate.
  • You will be emailed a link to the configuration for your router, download it.

Instructions

Please follow the instructions.

  • Download all the files.
  • Turn of WiFi and connect to the router with a cable.
  • Set your network interface to DHCP.
  • On http://192.168.1.1 login with admin/admin.
  • Choose System tools and Firmware upgrade.
  • Locate wlansi-delavnica-kr-firmware.bin on your computer and press Upgrade.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not turn off your router while upgrading!
  • When theSystem (second from left) light turns on permanently, continue..
  • Setup a telnet connection:
    • IP: 192.168.1.1
    • Windows: PuTTY
    • Mac OS X and Linux: telnet 192.168.1.1 in terminal
  • Run the following commands.
    firstboot
    sync
    
  • Reboot the router, telnet to it again.
  • Set the same password as in the reference configuration:
    root@OpenWrt:/# passwd
    Changing password for root
    New password: 
    Retype password: 
    Password for root changed by root
    
  • Disable firewall:
    root@OpenWrt:/# /etc/init.d/firewall stop
    root@OpenWrt:/# /etc/init.d/firewall disable
    
  • Copy the exctracted etc file with scp on the router:
    • Windows:
      • Run WinSCP.
      • Hostname: 192.168.1.1
      • User name: root
      • Password: as you have set it
      • File protokol: SCP
      • Press Login
      • Ignore errors.
      • Click ...
      • Enter into etc/
      • Copy the conent of etc/you downloaded to the etc/ on the router.
      • Confirm overwrite.
    • Mac OS X in Linux:
      hostname:~User$ scp -r Downloads/etc/ root@192.168.1.1:/
      
  • SSH to the router (username: root, geslo: as set before).
  • Run:
    chmod +x /etc/init.d/inituci && /etc/init.d/inituci enable ; reboot && exit
    
  • The node will reboot, after a few minutes you will be able to see it online on the node database.
