New Year Link Testing

We will be starting the new year by testing a wireless link from Pohorje, Slovenia to Wolfgangi, Austria on 2nd January 2012, similar to what we have done in June

How to participate

If you wish to participate, please follow this website and let us know that you intend to attend on pridi@wlan-si.net. We will keep you up to date with information about the event and possible changes. FI you would like to test any other links, let us know.

Timeplan

  • 11:00 meeting in Hoče (in front of Mercator) and driving up to Belvue on Pohorje

Google Maps - Point A is meeting in Hoče, Point B is where we will be continuing on foot

  • 12:00 - 1km walk easy uphill to the lookout tower.
  • 13:00 - 15:00 testing links towards Wolfgangi

General information

  • When: Monday, January 2nd 2012
  • Where: Slovenia (Pohorje), Austria (Wolfgangi)
    • This firmware with OLSRd used
    • SSID: testing.wlan-si.net
    • Freq: 5640 MHZ (no DFS for testing only)
    • Channel width: 20MHz (will be decreased if neessary)
    • ACK mode: no ACK (will be used if necessary)
    • config files for everyone (NOT to be used ater testing!!!!)
      • wolfgangi olsr config router config
      • use a static IP on laptop LAN (10.254.99.x (x=200+) / 255.255.0.0)
      • please do not connect these nodes to your networks
  • Communication: Skype, 2m simlex
  • Equipment available:
    • 1x RocketDish 30dB
    • 1x AirGrid 27dB
    • 2x Bullet M5 + Dish 30dB (not sure if we can carry it to the tower...)

These are the signal strength and throughput results, dtermined through router web interface.

Pohorje - Wolfgangi

Testing in windy conditions, there was some antenna jitter, slight signal strength variations.

Vertical polarization

  • 20MHz with ACK
    • Output power: 27 dBm
    • Signal: -68 dBm
    • TX/RX Rate: 58.5 Mbps/65 Mbps
    • Throughput: 35.7 Mbps TX/ 1.07 Mbps RX (duplex test)
  • 40MHz no ACK
    • Output power: 27 dBm
    • Signal: -74 dBm
    • Throughput: 27 Mbps TX/ 23 Mbps RX (duplex test)
  • 10MHz with ACK
    • Output power: 27 dBm
    • Signal: -65 dBm
    • Throughput: 17 Mbps TX/ 2.5 Mbps RX (duplex test)
  • 10MHz with ACK
    • Output power: 15 dBm
    • Signal: -73 dBm
    • TX/RX Rate: 29.3 Mbps/ 29.3 Mbps
    • Throughput: 15 Mbps TX/ 1 Mbps RX (duplex test)
  • 5MHz with ACK
    • Output power: 15 dBm
    • Signal: -69 dBm

Horizontal polarization

    • Output power: 15 dBm
    • Signal: -72 dBm
    • TX/RX Rate: 32.5 Mbps/ 32.5 Mbps
    • Throughput: 16 Mbps TX/ 4 Mbps RX (duplex test)

Conclusion

The test was sucessful, there is enough signal strength for a reliable connection and low noise floor about -90dBm. AirGrid on the Wolfgangi site performed significantly with actual traffic, might be due to problems with speed testing method.

Pohorje - Haloze

Testing in windy conditions, there was some antenna jitter, slight signal strength variations.

Dual polarization

37km link

  • 20MHz with ACK
    • Output power: 27 dBm (20dBm in Haloze)
    • Signal: -87 dBm
    • TX/RX Rate: 19.5 Mbps/13 Mbps
    • Speedtest: 4Mbps

Conclusion

AirMax Omni works also for long distance links.
